Mystery of missing luggage

A Pune-based lawyer, who travelled home from Dubai on the night of May 7 on a SpiceJet flight, was in for a rude shock when on May 8 he did not receive his luggage at Pune airport. He has further alleged that there has been no communication from the airline regarding his baggage or any compensation despite completing all formalities mandated by the international carrier.

Seoul Shah, a resident of the city, who flew from Dubai to Pune in the airline’s business class, has complained of not receiving his baggage on reaching his destination. According to his claim, the luggage contained valuables worth Rs 80,000. The missing items include gems, shirts, watches, perfumes and sunglasses.
The frustrated passenger completed the formalities of filling up a baggage regularity report (needed to set in motion the process for tracking missing luggage) on May 8, but has not heard from the airline since the day he lodged the complaint.

On being quizzed on the issue, SpiceJet’s customer care department said, “We have received a complaint from this passenger who flew business class from Dubai to Pune. We are trying to look into the matter but it seems like the baggage has been lost. Our team is still trying to trace the luggage.”

However, the airline claims that they have already communicated to the passenger of the reported missing baggage being untraceable or lost and that a detailed and thorough search for the baggage was done as per the standard operating procedures at both Dubai and Pune airports. The baggage was declared lost only after all efforts to trace it came to nothing, the airline offcials said.

Shah, however, said that the airline had contacted him a couple of days ago to inform him that his luggage is either lost or currently untraceable and they will only be able to take further action after completion of 21 days.

When Pune Mirrorcontacted Spice- Jet’s official, the official said, “Our department is trying to contact Pune Airport in this case. We are still unable to find the bag and it is still missing.”

The airlines also claims that s per the industry norm, they will be compensating the passenger at USD 20 per kg towards replacement of the lost baggage. The carrier also reportedly apologised for the inconvenience caused to the passenger due to the missing baggage.

Shah, however said, “I have received no such email from the airline and I wasn’t aware of any compensation until now. Anyway, my loss is much more than what the company has offered. This is a case of negligence and definitely not acceptable.”

“In any case, I am not at all interested in the compensation offered by them. I have suffered a huge loss and I want my baggage back at any cost.” Shah said.

The disappointed lawyer took to social media and tweeted his woes and sought help from SpiceJet officials but the only reply he received was that they will get back to him.
