Seven kg gold smuggled via Hyderabad Airport in three days

Hyderabad: Customs officials probing the gold smuggling racket from Dubai to Mumbai via Hyderabad, which was busted over the last four days, have reportedly found that over seven kilos of gold was smuggled in the last three days alone.

This revelation came after authorities arrested a woman passenger along with a six-member gang on charges of smuggling gold from Dubai. The 24-carat gold weighing 1,100 g that was pressed into thin sheets in cardboard boxes containing toys was recovered from her. “It’s a big racket having a wide network in India and Dubai. More details will emerge once we thoroughly question the arrested persons,” an official said.
There are several angles which need to be probed in detail. The main smuggler, who is said to be operating from Dubai, hired four members from Kerala, who took the assistance of two persons from Hyderabad. “We are probing how the perpetrator is establishing his network among gangs in Kerala and Hyderabad,” the official said.

In their statements, the gang members reportedly admitted that they had cleared five such gold consignments in the last four days. They played specific roles in smuggling gold from Dubai to Hyderabad and later to Mumbai.Investigators are also laying focus on the modus operandi adopted by smugglers in getting gold from Dubai in spite of heavy security at the airport.
