Airline excess baggage fee hike: Check what you’ll pay on flights for carrying extra

New Delhi: In what seems to be a major blow to flyers, almost all airlines have hiked rates applicable in cases where passengers carry more than 15 kg check-in baggage. According to a report on The Economic Times, low-cost carriers such as IndiGo and SpiceJet would be charging Rs 400 extra for any bag beyond 15 kgs compared to Rs 300/kg collected earlier.  It is worth mentioning here that in case of pre-bookings, IndiGo and GoAir have started charging Rs 1,900 for excess baggage worth Rs 5 kilos, Rs 3,800 for extra 10 kgs and Rs 11,400 for extra 30 kgs. Considering that air travel is already an expensive medium of travel, this is a major blow to those opting to travel on the economy class.
For IndiGo, this is the second excess baggage rate hike as it had revised the rate for baggage pre-booking to Rs 1,425 for extra five kgs, Rs 2,850 for 10 kgs, Rs 4,275 for 15 extra kgs and Rs 8,850 for 30 extra kgs.  This is in addition to the Rs 400 which the airline had earlier introduced to offset costs emerging from higher fuel rates.
On the other hand, luxury carrier Jey Airways – the first to tweak its baggage rules – has hiked excess baggage cost by Rs 100, taking the total to Rs 500/kg. In fact, in case of domestic flyers, the airline will only allow one piece of baggage not weighing beyond 15 kg. In case of a second bag weighing up to 15 kg, the passenger would b charged Rs 3,999, reported ET. It is worth mentioning that this rule will come into effect from July 15. It should also be noted that premier class passengers will be allowed to carry two check-in bags not exceeding 15 kgs each.  It may be noted that SpiceJet, too, had dedicated pre-booking charges for different categories of excess baggage – Rs 1,600 for 5 kgs, Rs 3,200 for 10 kgs, Rs 4,800 for 15 kgs, Rs 6,400 crore for 20 kgs and Rs 9,600 for 30 kgs.
