HC judge's luggage mishandled by airline

Kolkata: The luggage of a Calcutta High Court judge was mishandled by an airline, leading to its damage. An official complaint may be filed with the carrier on Wednesday.
Airport officials said Justice Debasish Kargupta, who arrived from Port Blair on Tuesday morning by an Air India flight, noticed a slit in one of the three checked-in bags. Protocol officer Partha Sengupta lodged a complaint with the NSCBI Airport police station, apprehending that the damage may have been intentional, and asked for the frisking of staffers present in the baggage-handling area.
Police and airline security frisked baggage handlers on duty, but no sharp object was found in anyone's possession. Unlike other carriers that outsource baggage-handling services to private agencies, Air India has its own ground-handling division - the Air India Air Transport Services Ltd (AIATSL).
Cops started an investigation into the case and the airline, too, said it was looking into what could have happened. "Bags are stacked over each other in the belly of an aircraft. The tear may have happened due to the weight of other bags on it. No content of the bag has been reported missing," the official said, adding that the airline had offered to replace the bag with a new one.
