Hyderabad’s RGIA aiming for water neutral status

Hyderabad: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad is moving towards becoming water neutral by rolling out various water conservation initiatives.

In 2017, the GMR-operated airport utilised over 34,000 KL of rainwater for various activities, thus reducing dependency on municipal water supply, RGIA officials said.
Among the busiest airports in India, RGIA’s water management system comprises robust water storage and distribution network, water efficient devices, water flow meters, efficient collection and transfer system of domestic waste water, sewage treatment plants and several other innovative solutions, officials said.

Apart from water efficient devices including E-tap (electronic sensors), E-flush and waterless urinals, the airport also has two Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to treat waste water. The sewage from various facilities is collected and transferred to the STPs which are of 925 KLD capacity each.

The treated waste water is recycled for use in flushing, cooling tower, and irrigation of the extensive greenery within the Airport. Also sludge generated from the STP was being used as manure for the plants in the airport’s landscaping, they said.
