State is owner of Mopa land, clarifies government

Panjim: State government on Thursday sought to clarify that it has given only the Right of Way to GMR Goa Airport Ltd with respect to the land for construction of the Greenfield international airport at Mopa and that the State continues to be owner of the land.

The clarification came days after Congress Mandrem MLA Dayanand Sopte alleged that the land has been mortgaged by GMR Airport to get the loan from the lenders and that the State has no right over it. The MLA had further charged that the company has obtained over Rs 1000 crore loan from the bank, while quoting the cost of the project as Rs 1500 crore only, whereas government record states it is Rs 3000 crore.

The MLA has announced to raise the issue on the Floor of the House during the upcoming monsoon session, next month.

“The Directorate of Civil Aviation, in regard to the statement made by Dayanand Sopte, MLA Mandrem on Mopa Airport Project has clarified that the Government has given only the Right of Way to GMR with respect to the land for construction of the Mopa Airport,” the press statement issued by the Government reads.

“The ownership of the land will remain with the Government and the land is not mortgaged by GMR to get loan from the lenders,” it added.
