Three cremations and a burial in Mumbai, engineer's remains flown to Delhi

A shrill cry filled the air at Ghatkopar's Rajawadi Hospital on Friday evening as junior technician Manish Pandey's wife learnt for the first time that her husband was not among the injured, but was dead. Sunita, married to Pandey for a year and living with him in Vasai, was informed just an hour before the cremation. As she collapsed, Pandey's parents Tejpratap and Munni too became inconsolable.
Pandey's family arrived from Varanasi on Friday for the last rites knowing that his charred remains couldn't be taken back home. "We couldn't inform his wife and mother, who came to visit him a month ago, last night as there was nobody to take care of them," said a relative.
The five families that lost their loved ones had to wait for another 24 hours to get their mortal remains. It was only around 3pm on Friday that the police completed the identification formalities and started handing over the bodies. The family of aircraft maintenance engineer Surabhi Gupta flew her body to Delhi for the last rites.
Marya Zuberi's mortal remains were the first to leave the Rajawadi mortuary at 3.25pm. She was buried at the Mohammed Rafi Nagar kabrasthan in Govandi in the presence of her parents from Allahabad, her husband, her 15-year-old daughter and extended family members. The remains of Pandey and pilot Pardeep Rajput were cremated at the Ghatkopar Hindu Crematorium around 6pm.
Unlike other families who were alerted of the tragedy after a few hours or through television, in the pilot's case, it was a mobile application that alerted them soon after the incident. Rajput's brother-in-law Kulvinder Chohan said Parabjyot was tracking his father's flight through an app like he often does. "Soon as it crashed, the flight went invisible. He found something amiss and immediately called the aviation company, who told them about the crash," he said. The family identified Rajput from a bangle (kada) on his hand and a broken tooth.
