Two held in airport with drug worth Rs 2 crore

Dum Dum: Two men were arrested in front of the airport's international section with 4.7kg Methaqualone, a banned narcotic, on Tuesday.

A team of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officers picked up S. Raju and T. Rao, originally from Tamil Nadu, with the drug that is worth at least Rs 2.35 crore in the international market, a directorate officer said.

"One of them had a ticket to Kuala Lumpur... he was supposed to deliver the consignment there," the officer said.

The drug was found concealed in packets stashed inside a carton of women's garments, the officer said.

"The two had said they were garment traders and when we opened the carton we did find women's clothes," he said.

"But the thickness of the sides of the carton made us suspicious. When we prised open the sides, we found the consignment in eight plastic packets."

"We used our test kits and found the powder in the packets was Methaqualone and we arrested the men," said the officer.

The consignment reached the city from Chennai on the Chennai-Howrah Mail a few days ago.
