Two held by DRI official for trying to courier drugs to New York

Mumbai: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials on Wednesday, busted a drug racket and arrested two persons, allegedly involved in smuggling the contraband in food items and couriering it to New York. The agency has also seized 75,000 tablets of a newly found drug, Aspadol, which is not banned under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The arrested duo has been identified as Sunil Dhutia and Bhavesh Shah. Dhutia runs the courier firm Om Internation in Marol, Andheri (E), while Shah runs Euphoria Pharmacy in Andheri (E), officials said.

According sources, Mumbai Zonal Unit of DRI detected a case in which white crystalline Methaqualone powder concealed inside food items and other restricted drugs declared as assorted items were attempted to be exported to New York through courier.

The agency had seized 30 kilograms of Methaqualone powder, 1.18 lakh Sildenafil (viagra) tablets and 75,000 Aspadol tablets from the courier terminal at the international airport. The said consignment was seized under the NDPS Act and Customs Act.
