Trichy: The air intelligence unit of the customs department found several baby tortoises in the baggage of a passenger who arrived at the Trichy International Airport in a Sri Lankan Airlines flight from Colombo on Wednesday morning.
Customs officials said they had grown suspicious about the activities of the passenger. However, before detaining him for interrogation and subsequent checking process, he had managed to escape from the customs hold area at the terminal, abandoning his baggage.
The customs officials found eight boxes inside a big leather bag. When they opened the boxes, the officials found several baby tortoises in them. The baby tortoises together weighed 12.40kg.
