Supreme Court agrees to hear transgender woman's plea against Air India over cabin crew recruitment

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India today agreed to hear the plea of a transgender woman who was refused a cabin crew position by national carrier Air India. The petitioner, Shanavi Ponnusamy moved the apex court against the airline alleging that she was denied a job on grounds of discrimination owing to her sexual orientation. In her petition, Ponnusamy claims that she was not hired by the national carrier because she is a transgender. She further urged the country’s top court to scrap the airlines’ hiring criteria which included a group discussion and a personality screening test for those willing to apply for cabin crew jobs. In her petition, Ponnusamy says that when applying for the job of a cabin crew member, Air India permits only a man or a woman to appear for the screening test.An engineering graduate, 26-year-old Ponnusamy hails from Tamil Nadu's Thoothukuddi. In July of 2017, she had applied for a job with the national carrier as a cabin crew member. However, she claimed that she was not selected despite performing exceptionally well in her examinations. The victim claimed that she had no other option than to apply as a woman since there was no transgender column in the form given to her by Air India.
