Cochin International Airport Ltd traffic growth hit by Nipah scare

Kochi: What the sector was apprehensive about, is now official. Though Nipah virus deaths were reported from Kozhikode and Malappuram, growth of domestic passenger traffic to Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) registered a dip in May and June.
Cial’s domestic sector in the first four months of 2018 witnessed a staggering near-35% growth, when compared to the same period previous year. In March alone it recorded a growth of 37.37%.
But this took a hit in May, as the growth rate declined to 24.54% when compared to the same period last year. It was even lower in June - a growth rate of just 13.9%. The growth in first half of 2018 averaged 29.71%.
Cial officials attributed the drop in domestic traffic in May and June to the scare created by Nipah.
“The period that was most affected by the Nipah scare was the second half of May and first half of June. If not for Nipah, the average growth in domestic passenger traffic would have been higher,” said Cial spokesperson.
