Major relief: Saudi to take biometrics of Indian crew operating flights there, not retain passports

New Delhi: Crew of Indian carriers operating flights to Saudi Arabia will no longer need to deposit their original travel documents like passports on arrival in the country and then face the risk of detention there later, thanks to a Jet Airways commander. Saudi will now take their fingerprints on arrival and departure to complete immigration formalities and allow them to retain passports.

While Saudi had been retaining crew passports for a long time, last July the crew of an Air India flight to Jeddah had been detained during random checks for documents while travelling in the city. They were released after the airline intervened and told the police the crew did not have original documents since the same had been retained at Jeddah airport on arrival.

After this, Jet Airways’ senior commander Captain Ravi Chander Rajan raised the issue with the government and also moved Delhi High Court. “Ministry of external affairs has informed (us) the matter was taken up with Indian embassy, Riyadh, and they have informed that Saudi authorities have recently introduced new biometric registration system through which they allow crew members to retain their passports and also grant visa for six months with a maximum duration of stay of 72 hours,” the aviation ministry has told Captain Rajan in a communication dated August 2, 2018.
