Mid-flight shoe swap for gold thwarted aboard Air India's Dubai-Bangalore flight

Bengaluru: Customs officials officials have claimed to have successfully thwarted a mid-air attempt to smuggle gold on board an Air India flight from Dubai. The episode ended with the arrest of two men and seizure of gold worth Rs 41.3 lakh.
The officials claimed that the modus operandi was to grind gold ornaments into a paste and conceal it in the inner lining of the footwear of one of the carriers who boarded the flight from Dubai. The footwear was exchanged with his accomplice for whom the adjacent seat was booked from Goa where the plane has a scheduled pitstop before its final landing at Bengaluru airport.
The officials reportedly had received a tip-off about the first passenger from Dubai identified as Puthan Veedu Samseer Ali and his accomplice, Salman Faris Ali. Both men were frisked and detained at the city airport on Sunday.
