Pratt & Whitney again struggles with engine issues in A320s, says report

Aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney is yet again struggling with engine snags in A320 aircraft as low-cost airlines GoAir and Indigo experienced vibrations in their engines, Business Standard reported.

Pratt & Whitney had already rectified flaws in three areas ranging from degradation in the combustion chamber to a faulty design in the seals, the report said. However, sources told BS that the vibration was a result of the damage in the low pressure turbine blade of the geared turbo fan engines.

According to sources in Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the engine snags are due to issues with the design of the seal which led to the grounding of airlines earlier this year. The company has refitted the engines with dry face carbon seal.

“There have been very few isolated cases of low pressure turbine blade failure worldwide. Any time such failure occurs in flights, it results in increased engine vibration,” a person aware of the development said, adding that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will issue an advisory on the engine snag issue after its investigation is concluded.
