Air India Express plane hits Trichy airport compound wall, lands safely in Mumbai

Trichy: The tyres of a Dubai-bound Air India Express plane with 130 passengers onboard hit the compound wall of the Trichy international airport while the aircraft was taking off from here around 1.20 am on Friday, damaging an ILS (instrument landing system) antenna and a small portion of the west side wall.

However, the Boeing B737-800 aircraft landed safely at Mumbai airport around 5.35 am, after abandoning its journey to Dubai.

The aircraft sustained major damage to its underbelly and undercarriage but the pilots, unaware of the damage, continued with the flight instead of returning to land in Trichy. Enroute when pilots realised the aircraft had a problem, they carried out an emergency landing in Mumbai at about 5.35am.

An Air India Express spokesperson said: "After flight IX 611 from Trichy to Dubai had taken off from Trichy at about 1.30 am today, it was reported by local Airport officials at Trichy that they have observed that Aircraft might have come in contact with the airport perimeter wall. The matter was conveyed to the pilot in command. The pilot in command reported that the aircraft systems were operating normally".
"The flight diverted to Mumbai and landed safely at about 5.35am in Mumbai and taxied on its own power to the parking stand. All 130 passengers and 6 crew members on board the aircraft alighted safely. No one suffered any injuries," the official statement said.
