Airport to conduct study on bird hazard

Thiruvananthapuram: Trivandrum International Airport authorities have decided to conduct a study on bird hazard at the airport.
The study will be conducted through a consultancy to study the birds in and around the airport and provide recommendations for appropriate mitigation measures to curb bird hazards.
The birds on the airport premises interfere with the aircraft flight path, even leading to emergency landing. In a recent incident, an aircraft of Oman Airways was hit by a bird while landing at the airport.
“The number of bird hits reported in the recent past at the airport are on the rise despite our continuous efforts and measures to keep the area unattractive to the birds. Hence the initiative to have a thorough study,” said a statement issued by the airport.
The disposal of waste in the locality of airport was found to be a major reason for the bird-hit cases. And the airport in association with city corporation had set up an aerobic bin unit in Vallakadavu in March.
