Fog forces diversion of two flights to Ahmedabad at Surat airport

Surat: Two flights from Hyderabad and Delhi to Surat had to be diverted to Ahmedabad airport due to fog induced poor visibility on Wednesday morning. Surat-bound IndiGo flight from Delhi and Surat-bound SpiceJet flight from Hyderabad were the two flights diverted to Ahmedabad, sources said. Flight diversions will become more frequent to other airports because of fog in the winter season and non-operational instrument landing system (ILS) at Surat airport.
The ILS system is not operational for a long time, after it was shifted from Vesu-end of the airport subsequent to Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) order on displacement of 615 metre of runway due to building height obstruction in the flight path of aircraft. In the absence of ILS at the airport, flights are getting delayed and cancelled due to fog ahead of the winter season. It was in February that SpiceJet had cancelled its Surat-Delhi morning flight due to fog situation at Delhi airport and absence of ILS at Surat airport.
