Jaipur: Airlines buy tractors, register them as farm equipment!

Jaipur: A probe by the State Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (SDRI) of the Rajasthan Government has revealed that at least three airlines and the Airport Authority of India (AAI) purchased tractors from different dealers in the Jaipur and Ajmer and got them registered as agriculture equipment, thus availing of heavy concessions in registration charges and road tax.
These tractors were being used for hauling luggage of passengers and freight to be transported by aircraft at the Jaipur International Airport.
A total of 25 tractors were being used at the airport. They are owned by Indigo and SpiceJet Airlines, besides Indo-Thai Airport Management Services and Airport Authority of India. In addition, the airlines were also using 29 other vehicles which were not even registered. They included the buses used to ferry passengers from the terminal building to the aircraft.
After checking all the papers, the SDRI came to the conclusion that at least Rs 44 crore tax had been evaded by these companies and the Airports Authority of India.
