Police directed to file FIR against Tamilisai

Madurai: A district court in Tuticorin on Thursday directed the police to investigate and register an FIR against state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president, Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan and party functionaries based on a petition by the father of research scholar Lois Sofia, who was arrested after shouting slogans against the BJP leader inside a Tuticorin-bound flight.
On September 3, the BJP leader was travelling by a Chennai-Tuticorin flight in which the student was also travelling along with her parents. After the flight landed, the 28-year-old had shouted slogans against the BJP, calling it fascist. Based on a complaint by Tamilisai, Sofia was arrested by the Tuticorin police and released on bail.
Meanwhile, Sofia’s father, Dr A A Sami, a retired government doctor filed a complaint against Tamilisai and BJP cadres with the Pudukottai police in Tuticorin district. Sami, in his complaint stated that at the Tuticorin airport terminal, his daughter was surrounded by BJP functionaries who abused her, bullied and issued death threats.
Since police sat on the complaint without taking any action, a petition was moved before the judicial magistrate to direct the police to act on the complaint, Sami’s counsel, E Athisayakumar told TOI.
On Thursday, when the petition came for hearing, judicial magistrate-3, S Tamilselvi observed that based on the materials produced before the court, there is sufficient ground to register the complaint against the functionaries who came along with the BJP president.
The Pudukottai police have been directed to report back on or before November 20.
