Tamil Nadu hasn’t asked for 2nd airport in Chennai

Chennai: Much has been spoken about a second airport for the city, but the state government, it turns out, has not asked the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for such a facility.

“Tamil Nadu has made no proposal to us for a second airport in Chennai,” said AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra on Sunday. Mohapatra, who talked to journalists after planting a couple of medicinal plants in the park inside the AAI quarters in Meenambakkam, said AAI will send a multi-disciplinary team only when the state government makes a proposal.

The team will look into the possibility of developing an airport by assessing runway availability, whether that runway would be in conflict with the existing runway or if there is a military runway nearby. “These have to be studied before the feasibility study. The last communication from the state government was that they will give us some site. But so far we have not heard about it,” he said.
