Airline passengers get the winter rescheduling blues

Pune: The approaching winter has already started upsetting air travel plans. There has been at least a 30% increase in flight reschedulings — including delays and cancellations — from Pune as well as various other destinations, tour companies told TOI. Though flight delays and cancellations are common once the airline winter schedule kicks in every year, this holiday season has been particularly problematic.

Tour companies said in the last 20 days to a month, at least three to four such changes, including rescheduling of flights or cancellations, have hit most travel companies.

Santosh Gupta, the owner of Shree Vinayak Holidays, said if a passenger is travelling from Pune to Delhi and then to an international destination, the last thing that he/she needs is the flight getting postponed.
“If there is a connecting flight, the delay may cause one to miss that flight. When one flight is postponed for over three hours, the passenger gets a refund, but making another booking at the last moment comes at a huge expense. Changes and cancellations have shot up by 30%-40% this year when compared to the previous years,” said Gupta.
Shaishav Parekh, a partner at Panam Tours and Travels and the secretary of the Travel Agents’ Association of India (TAAI), Pune chapter, said, “One of the airlines has discontinued its Pune-Hyderabad flight, which would otherwise take off from Pune at 5.30 am. Those who had booked tickets on that flight earlier will get a refund, but if they try to book another ticket in the Pune-Hyderabad sector now, they will obviously have to pay a much higher price for the ticket. This year, such reschedulings have gone up by almost 30% in comparison to the same period last year.”
