Banned crackers seized from councillor house

Kolkata: A day after Bidhannagar Police started raids against sale of banned sky lanterns and illegal crackers around 8kms of the airport, the officers on Friday seized over 3,000 sky lanterns and a huge cache of banned crackers like rockets, shells and dodoma from the house of a Trinamool Congress councillor.
Officers of Baguiati police station barged into the house of Basabi Dutta at Ashwininagar and seized the banned crackers from a godown on the ground floor of the house. Police said Dutta claimed that the crackers were stored by his brother-in-law, Kalipada Dutta, who is into the firecracker business. She has also reportedly claimed she had no knowledge about the banned crackers being stored at her house.
“Acting on source information, our officers raided the house and found the cache. We have seized the banned crackers and have registered a case under specific IPC sections and West Bengal Fire Services Act,” said a senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate.
