Lucknow: Amid growing clamour for construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Yogi Adityanath government has given a push to put the temple town on the global destination map by deciding to develop the existing airstrip in neighbouring Faizabad into a full-fledged airport.
The state government has decided to acquire more than 280 acres of land around the airstrip and widen it to allow landing of bigger aircraft. The existing air strip is just over 1.5 km long and 30 meters wide, barely enough to allow landing of a nine-seater aircraft. For bigger aircraft, the airstrip needs to have a width of 45 meters and a length of 2.5 km, experts said. Besides, it should also have at least 100-150 meters set-off area on either sides of the runway.
According to an internal note sent by the Airport Authority of India to UP's department of civil aviation on October 12 - TOI has a copy of it - the state government needs to draft a master plan envisaging acquisition of at least 284 acres of land around the existing airstrip and expanding it to allow landing of a 200-seater A-321 aircraft.
The note adds that for landing of aircraft of ATR category, at least 224 acres of land around the site needs to be acquired. UP's civil aviation minister Nand Gopal Nandi told TOI that the state government would soon start the process of acquisition.
