Chennai: Officers of the Customs seized two kgs of gold worth Rs 63 lakhs from six lady passengers at Anna International Airport here on Sunday.
In a press statement, Commissioner of Customs said, due to constant vigil they have detected several other cases of smuggling of gold.
On Sunday, one lady passenger, Juvairiya Fathima Nachiar (42), arrived from Singapore by Air India flight and was intercepted at exit of the airport arrival hall on suspicion that she might have been carrying gold.
In a personal search 2 crude gold chains and 4 gold bars each weighing 100 grams, with foreign markings all of 24 Karat purity, totally weighing 689 grams and totally valued at Rs 22 lakhs were recovered from her which were concealed in her rectum.
