'PTA Rahim helped Karipur gold smuggling accused'

Kozhikode: P T A Rahim, LDF backed independent MLA of Kunanmangalam, has once again landed in a controversy with reports emerging that he had intervened to cancel the Cofeposa detention order against Abu Lais, the key accused in the Karipur gold smuggling case.

Rahim had forwarded the representation of the father of Lais to the home department in 2017 stating that the Cofeposa order issued years back had not been renewed and had therefore lost its validity.

However, the state government had rejected the request and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had arrested Koduvally native Lais who had been absconding since 2013 from Thrissur in August.

The Cofeposa advisory board meeting held earlier this month had confirmed the Cofeposa order for one year with effect from August 25.

Rahim admitted that he had just forwarded the representation from the father of Lais to the home department for consideration. "It is natural for an MLA to forward a petition received from an aggrieved party to the government for consideration as part of duty. It was up to the government to take suitable action on the petition and the government had rejected it," Rahim said, adding that allegations are being raked up against him to target him with the upcoming Parliament elections in mind.
