1.5 kg gold worth Rs 49 lakh seized at Chennai airport

Chennai: Customs officials on Saturday and Sunday apprehended five passengers at Chennai international airport from whom a total of 1.5 kg gold worth Rs 49 lakh was seized. One of them was arrested.

On Sunday morning, Abdul Samad (50), an Indian passport holder, arrived from Dubai by Emirate Airlines flight No.EK 542. He was intercepted at exit of the arrival hall. When his check in luggage was examined, 10 gold cut bits weighing 580 grams valuing Rs. 19 lakhs were recovered. They were 24 karot and were kept concealed among his toiletries and other personal baggage.The gold was seized under provisions of Customs Act 1962. The passenger was arrested as he was a repeat offender and had earlier indulged in smuggling.

On Saturday night, four passengers, Muthuraman Poominadhan (21) Sahul Hameed (42), Mujib Rahman (50), Kalandar Abbas (27) all of whom had Indian passports, arrived from Colombo by Indigo Airlines flight 6E 1204 and were intercepted at exit of the Customs arrival hall.On questioning, they admitted to have concealed gold in their rectum in the form of rubbery spread. The rubbery spread was forcefully ejected by officials and on extraction it resulted in the recovery of 4 gold ingots of 24 Karat purity, weighing to 929 grams, valuing Rs. 30 lakhs. The gold was seized under provisions of Customs act 1962. Customs officials are on the lookout for repeat offenders, sources said.
