Pune: The direct flight between Pune and Singapore by Jet Airways have got the customs authorities here to be extra vigilant as they worry about possible smuggling of drugs from Southeast Asia.
“We are not saying that there will be a sudden spurt in drug smuggling. Singapore is a very modern country and a travel hub for many across the world. There might be cases in which we catch people trying to smuggle in gold too,” a customs official said.
“There have been numerous instances in which gold has been recovered from flights bound for Pune from the Middle East destinations such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Gold has been recovered from underneath the seats and washroom of flights. This goes for all airlines having international connections to and from Pune,” the official said.
“The new flight has started and there is a strong chance of the smugglers trying the new route for smuggling drugs as well,” said another source in the customs department.
