Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune and four other cities to get new airports

As many as eight new airports could soon take off in India including in states like Delhi, Maharashtra, Kolkata and Tamil Nadu, an official told Moneycontrol.
“New airports in Dholera (district in Ahmedabad), Mopa (Goa), Jewar (Delhi), Navi Mumbai (Mumbai), Kolkata, Chennai, Bhubaneshwar and Pune are at various stages,” the official said.

The official said that the Dholera airport will be a joint venture among Dholera Authority, Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and will be 60-70 kilometers away from Ahmedabad.

“Shareholders agreement between all the concerned parties is being worked out for Dholera…” he said.

Sources have indicated that AAI will hold 51 percent share, Gujarat government will hold 33 percent and DMIC will hold 16 percent share in the airport.

The new airport will see civil construction starting next financial year. Initially, the airport will have a runway of 3,000 meters and will handle up to 5.5 million passengers annually. The airport could have another runway depending on passenger traffic.

While, for the new airport in the national capital region (NCR), the official said that things are at the stage of land acquisition, dialogues are being held between concerned authorities in Kolkata and Chennai.

The new airport at Jewar in Noida has seen protests from farmers due to felling of trees, exploitation of groundwater, pollution and also, inadequate compensation for land.

Media reports, however, have suggested that the Uttar Pradesh government has agreed to release close to Rs 1,260 crore for the initial land acquisition process.

“For the first phase of the airport, 1,334 hectare land is required. 1,239 hectare land from six villages (Rohi, Dayanatpur, Parohi, Kishorpur, Ranhera and Banwariwas),” the report said.
The proposed airport will need 5,000 hectares of land and is expected to be operational by 2022-23. The airport will be second in the NCR after Indira Gandhi International Airport.
“We are trying for a second airport in Bhubaneshwar. The government has indicated certain sites where this can be done,” the official said adding that Centre is looking at various sites where new airports can be developed.
