January 15 target for Shirdi airport runway extension

Pune: The Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited (MADC) have confirmed completion of the runway extension work at the Shirdi airport by January 15 next year.
The airport came up a year ago and currently provides connectivity to Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi. MADC officials said the airport would provide connectivity to four more cities from 2019.

“Extension of the runway is important because the airport has attracted quite a few airlines within a short period. The extended runway will be an advantage as more airlines are set to start functioning from the airport from next year,” an MADC official said.

“The airport will see flights to and from Jaipur, Ahmadabad, Bengaluru and Bhopal. Though we cannot disclose much as of now, SpiceJet will operate most of these flights,” the official added.

Located nearly 14km from the Shirdi town, the airport was inaugurated on October 1, 2017. The length of the runway is 2,100m and it will be extended by another 700m.
