Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday said that his government is exploring feasibility for a new airport near Erumeli for Sabarimala pilgrims. Erumeli is 25 Km from Sabarimala. Kerala CM told state assmebly that the government has given in-principle nod for the airport.
"We have decided in-principle to build a greenfield airport for the Sabarimala piligrims. Cheruvally estate has been chosen for this project. Louis Burger Consulting Pvt ltd has been assigned to study Techno- economic feasibility and environmental impact," he said.
He further said that the consultant has submitted a preliminary report and the project will move ahead after the final report.
Over 5 crore pilgrims visit Sabarimala shrine each year. Presently, airports at Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are closest airports to the shrine.
