‘Passenger mistakes announcement’

Kochi: A passenger who accidentally opened an emergency exit door of a Hubballi-bound IndiGo flight at Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) on Friday had done so after misunderstanding a pilot’s announcement, said airport sources.
The flight left around 5pm, about two hours behind the scheduled time.

“The passenger mistook an announcement to unfasten seat belt for an emergency alert and opened the door,” said an airport source.

The cabin crew are supposed to take extra care while seating a passenger next to the emergency door. As per civil aviation regulations, the passenger sitting next to the emergency exit needs to be identified prior to departure, say aviation experts.
The cabin crew is supposed to meet this passenger personally and have to ask whether s/he is willing to take the responsibility of opening the exit door in case of an emergency. If not, s/he needs to be shifted to another seat .
