Ailing teen collapses on flight to Bangalore, dies

Kolkata: A 16-year-old boy flying to Bangalore for treatment of brain tumour died at the Kolkata airport on Thursday, minutes after boarding the flight and days before he was scheduled to undergo a surgery.
Airport officials said the Nadia boy, Suman Pal, had collapsed after taking his seat and the cabin crew immediately called the airport medical team for assistance. He was found sinking and a doctor advised the family to immediately take him to a hospital. The airport authorities provided an ambulance in which he was taken to a government hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

“The family members accompanying the boy had documents that showed he was suffering from brain tumour for several months and was travelling to Bangalore for treatment. Our medical team had checked him and after they found he was sinking, had arranged for transportation to the hospital,” said a senior official of Medica Superspeciality Hospital that runs the medical unit at the airport.

The boy was travelling with a ‘fit to fly’ certificate and had cleared all the mandatory checks while boarding the 6.55am SpiceJet flight. “He had even taken his premium window seat but before the flight could take off, he began feeling uneasy and soon collapsed at his seat. The cabin crew called the medical unit at the airport who rushed to the flight and checked him but realising he needed immediate medical attention and had to be admitted to a hospital. It is extremely unfortunate that a bright young boy died at such a tender age,” said an airport official.
