Flight to link Ayodhya, Janakpur

Non-stop flight services between the religious towns of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh and Janakpur in Nepal may be in the offing. Indian civil aviation authorities are known to be keen to develop an air route linking the two cities.

Discussions between the two countries on the sidelines of the Global Aviation Summit that concluded earlier this week also involved routes between Buddhist towns of Lumbini and Gaya as well as Nepalgunj and New Delhi for pilgrims headed to Kailash Mansarovar.

According to the Hindu mythology, Sita was the daughter of King Janak who ruled over Janakpur.

According to a source from the Indian side, India has given an in-principle approval for a route connecting Nepalgunj and New Delhi.

“We are yet to get a formal approval, but we are very positive [about Nepalgunj],” Director-General, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, Sanjiv Gautam, told The Hindu over telephone.

He added, “the direct flights will bring Indian tourists, especially pilgrims planning a trip to Kailash Mansarovar. It will also be beneficial for a number of people from western Nepal who have to either travel via Kathmandu or take rural transport via Uttar Pradesh.”
