Prabhu: No concrete decision on expansion of JSR Airport

Ranchi: The Government of India has not yet taken any decision regarding the extension or transfer of the Jamshedpur Airport.
However, the pre-feasibility report related to the launch of a non-operational airport in Chakulia, about 70 km from Jamshedpur, has been prepared. Also, on July 11, 2012, the Civil Aviation Ministry has given site clearance to Tata Steel Limited to set up a Greenfield Airport for public use near Jamshedpur, but there is no final decision on this proposal in the absence of any further efforts by the applicant agency. Civil Aviation Minister, Suresh Prabhu gave the written reply to a starred question of MP Mahesh Poddar in Rajya Sabha. Due to the postponement in the Rajya Sabha and continuous adjournment of the proceeding, Poddar could not get the opportunity to ask supplementary questions on this subject.

Poddar wanted to know whether the new airport in Jamshedpur is being built in Chakulia, 70 kilometers away from the city. Whether technical / business reports have been prepared for this purpose and what is the feedback from this report? Whether it is possible to increase the land available near the present airport and if possible, instead of making the airport 70 kms away from the city, would the government want to expand the existing airport?

Responding to the question Prabhu said that Chakulia already has an airport which is currently non-operational. Pre-feasibility study has been done to make this airport operational. According to the received report, this airport can be operationalised for the landing of Category 3C aircraft such as ATR 72 - 500 by completing infrastructure and additional land requirements.
