Surat-Sharjah flight to take wings from January 30

Surat: After years of wait, Surti flyers will be able to travel to international destination from Surat airport from January 30.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to visit South Gujarat for inaugurating Dandi Memorial at Dandi village on January 30, will be flagging off the maiden international flight from Surat to Sharjah. This was confirmed by Navsari MP CR Paatil.

Modi will also be laying foundation stone for the Rs350 crore worth of infrastructure projects, including terminal expansion, taxi track, apron etc.

Air India Express, a subsidiary of Air India, will be operating Airbus on Surat-Sharjah route and booking for the same is likely to start in the next couple days. The airline has added Surat and Sharjah destination on its website already.

Sources said Air India Express will be operating Surat-Sharjah flight service twice a week in the initial phase and the frequency will be increased in the summer schedule by almost five service in a week.

Paatil said, “After long deliberations between civil aviation department, AAI and Air India Express, it was decided to commence Surat-Sharjah flight service from January 30. On this day, Prime Minister Modi, who is visiting Dandi, will come to Surat for flagging off the aircraft.”

Last year in June, Surat airport was declared customs-notified and immigration check post for operating limited international flight operations was set up. Immediately after the development, Air India Express had shown interest to operate Surat-Sharjah flight service.
