Temporary printed entry passes at airport pose security threat

Chennai: The city airport may be a high security facility, but the entry passes issued to airport and airline staff are so primitive that they can be duplicated easily.

The CISF and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have been sending inputs to the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) about the need to provide smart entry cards that can be read by devices so that unauthorized people cannot enter airport terminal. Year-end is the time when security is at its lowest as the BCAS issues temporary paper printed cards that can be easily replicated at any DTP centre in the city.

Sources said that inspite of repeated demand and attempt to float tender to have smart cards as entry passes, the BCAS is yet to implement then. More than 5,000 employees work at Chennai airport including, AAI staff, ground staff, airline staff, and other staff of contractors. But most of them, including senior AAI officials have been given paper-printed entry passes for a year on a temporary basis.
