After intel on hijacking, checks up at Chennai airport

Chennai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has stepped up security at the Chennai airport after security agencies issued an alert to all airports and airlines across the country. The alert came after a call was made to the AI Operation Control Centre at Mumbai airport warning that an Indian Airlines (part of Air India) flight would be hijacked and taken to Pakistan.
"We have increased checks of passengers and the random checks done at the airport have doubled since Saturday," a senior official of the CISF said.

CISF has patrol vehicles belonging to quick reaction team with vehicle-mounted weapons are used to drive around the campus with armed personnel. They have been monitoring vehicles and movement of passengers into the airport.

The alert issued by security agencies said there was a specific input that flights are likely to be hijacked and taken to Pakistan.

The alert referred to Air India but other airlines were also warned. Passengers who walk into an airport are checked by CISF and also airline security at the boarding gates. Though passengers are not frisked by airline security, they keep an eye on the baggage and also the details of the passengers who come to board planes.
