Plea to add Madurai airport as ‘point of call’ in BASA

Madurai: Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TNCCI) has urged the central government to declare Madurai airport as an international airport and add the airport as ‘point of call’ in the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) with other countries. With the election around the corner, the trade body has urged the state government to exert pressure on the central government to get things done for Madurai airport.

Recently, aviation minister Suresh Prabhu laid the foundation stone for the apron expansion in Madurai airport through video conferencing. Although he mentioned that there is a demand for 24 hours operation at Madurai airport, he did not make any announcement on the same.

Replying to a recent RTI application, Airports Authority of India (AAI) has stated that airline carriers have not shown interest in operating flights from Madurai during night time to introduce night operation. Irked by the reply, the trade body has said that there are many operators willing to introduce flights at night time but they are waiting for the announcement of round the clock operation.
