At Dabolim, woman nabbed trying to smuggle Rs 18.9 lakh gold

Vasco: Attempts to smuggle gold into the country through Goa International Airport, Dabolim keep throwing up innovative attempts. On Monday, an female passenger aboard Air India flight AI-994 attempted to smuggle gold worth Rs 19 lakh by concealing it in the waistband of her jeans.

According to customs sleuths, 590 gms of gold had been melted and shaped into a thin strip, which was then hidden in the specially designed pocket in the waistband of the jeans that the lady was wearing. The lady, arrived from Dubai but was caught with the gold worth about Rs 18.9 lakh after customs officers led by deputy commissioner Raghvendra P.


The gold was kept in a transparent, polythene packet but the woman did not declare the gold. The gold found after officers frisked the passenger and the gold was seized under the Customs Act, 1962, officials said.

The exercise was conducted under the supervision of commissioner of customs, Goa, R Manohar.
