Bengaluru offers plug-and-play options

Bengaluru: The biennial Aero India is here again, ever since its debut in 1996. But in the run-up to the event, there were rumours about it being shifted to Bakshi-ka-Talab airbase on the outskirts of Lucknow. The key requirements for such an event are, among other things, a fully functional international airport, good hotels and efficient transport system.
Eventually, Bengaluru and Yelahanka Air Force Station got the nod as the venue offers plug-and-play infrastructure which has been efficient over the years. The city also has many accommodation options, including many close to the international airport.

Lucknow city and the airbase wouldn’t have had enough time to prepare for this show which attracts tens of aircraft, hundreds of delegates and thousands of visitors. “Lucknow airbase doesn’t have enough hangars or a good enough runway. The road connecting Lucknow and the airbase is in bad condition,” Air Marshal (retd) BK Pandey told TOI.

Industry sources, including managing directors of two firms who didn’t want to be named, said conducting an aero show there would have required huge expenditure to create infrastructure.

In Bengalury, connectivity to the venue is not a problem and the venue has permanent structures created for Aero India. As the IAF Training Command is headquartered here, the force has enough personnel who can be deputed for the show.
