Kochi’s global travel boom

Kochi: Investment and consumption may have waned in India, but the number of Kochiites travelling to foreign destinations has increased by 25-30% this summer vacation.

Almost 50% tour operators are now offering international packages for 5-10 days. The bookings are often done in advance as airlines charge exorbitant fares from last minute flyers. Though far-east countries draw the highest number of tourists, Europe is also catching up in a big way.

As many as 100 group tours are being organized from Kochi to far east countries in the April-May period, with the total number of travellers touching 4,500-5,000. In comparison, close to 2,000 passengers are travelling to Europe during the same period. Around 50 group tours are underway or being planned. It is almost a 50% increase compared with the number of people who travelled to Europe last year.
In fact, outbound tourism from Kochi to foreign locales has been growing robustly in the past 4-5 years. Almost 75% travellers book at least two months in advance for a trip and majority of those travelling are couples, either in the forties or retired.

Trips to the Holy Land is also popular among the travellers. US and Scandinavian countries have also been growing in popularity as favoured tourist destinations.

This summer, 10-12 group tours are being organized from Kochi to the US taking the number of travellers to the country to 500 while another 250-300 passengers have opted for Scandinavian countries.
