386 gms Gold worth Rs 12.7 lakh seized at airport

Chennai: Customs officials on Tuesday seized 368 gms gold valued at Rs 12.7 lakh in two separate incidents at the Anna International Airport here.
A statement from the office of the Commissioner of Customs said officials intercepted one Vasanth Jay Raj, 25, of Madurai, who arrived from Sharjah by Air India Flight on suspicion of carrying gold.
On examination of his checked-in luggage, one circular gold ingot concealed ingeniously in a bluetooth speaker, one gold strip concealed in a hair dryer and two gold strips concealed in a hair straightener and six gold links concealed in three wrist watches, of 24 K purity, totally weighing 232 gms and valued at Rs.7.7 lakh were seized under the Customs Act, 1962.
In another incident, the officers intercepted a Srilankan woman passenger FathimaBathul (43), who arrived from Colombo by an Air India, on suspicion of carrying gold.
During her personal search, four gold cut bits of 24K purity, weighing 154 gms and valued at Rs five lakhs, which were concealed in rectum were recovered.
