Competitive fares make flying cheaper to Chennai

Chennai: Flying to Chennai has become cheaper as airlines have reduced fares following a discount sale offered by a low-cost carrier on most routes for travel in June.

Fares between Rs 6,000 and Rs 7,000 on metro and non-metro routes have come down to Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000.
One-way fare from Pune to Chennai was starting at Rs 4,000 for travel at the end of the month. It has now come down to less than Rs 3,500.

There has been a considerable dip in starting fares for travel in the first week of June. Fares now start at Rs 2,600 from Mumbai, Rs 5,000 from Delhi, Rs 1,300 from Bengaluru and Rs 1,700 from Hyderabad. These fares were much higher earlier.

Airline sources said a sale at Rs 999 across all routes introduced by IndiGo for travel after May 29 is mainly aimed at boosting travel after the peak summer season. More airlines are expected to follow suit with fare cut announcements.

Though the fare cut is expected to help people who will be returning to Chennai after holiday trips, those who have not made their travel plans yet will benefit more. In addition to low fares, airlines are also offering discounts on cabin baggage-only fares, excess baggage and other facilities.
