Poor signage blurs metro link at airport

Chennai: It's been a year since the walkalator tube connecting airport terminals with metro rail stations was opened, but passengers, especially those who are new to the city, continue to struggle to find their way to the transit station.

On Monday evening, several passengers who had arrived on domestic flights were found walking with their luggage to the metro station nearly a kilometre from the terminal. Some said they were not aware of the tube that links the terminal with the metro station as they did not find signages inside the building. There are no signages outside the terminal guiding people about metro trains or the direction to take to reach the metro station.
Domestic passengers may use a lift to reach the level where the walkalator is located from inside the terminal or they can take an escalator or stairs to reach the walkalator tube once they exit the arrival terminal. However, many do not know where to go.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) withdrew the battery-car shuttles after the walkalator tube was opened.

T Devaraj, who came to pick up a passenger, said, "Many were standing confused outside the terminal not knowing how to get to the metro station. They knew that metro trains are available but had no clue how to reach the station. Many walked to the station, while others, who had earlier used the battery car, looked for the shuttle services."
Air Passengers Association of India (APAI) national president D Sudhakara Reddy said, "We have raised the issue in the passenger advisory committee. There are not adequate signages. I have seen people walking on the flyover down despite the moving cars."
