Gold worth Rs 38.4 lakh seized from passengers at Chennai airport

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai airport detected one case of gold smuggling on Friday morning and four cases in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. They seized a total of 1.17 kg of gold, worth Rs 38.4 lakh.
On Friday, the officials searched Mohammed Rafi, 23, of Chennai who arrived here from Kuala Lumpur in an AirAsia flight. They found three brown packets of rubbery spread in his rectum. On extraction, 313 gram of gold, worth Rs 10.29 lakh, was recovered.
In the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, the officials intercepted Muhammad Yasin Bin Mohd Ghani, 33, of Kuala Lumpur and Farjana, 26, of Chennai who arrived here from Kuala Lumpur in a Batik Airlines flight.
The officials searched them and recovered three semi-finished crude gold chains and two cylindrical gold rods, totally weighing 618 gram and worth Rs 20.30 lakh.
