Airspace closures: The Five ‘Freedoms of Air’ and the underlying geopolitics

Pakistan has allowed Indian commercial airlines to overfly its airspace that was closed after the Balakot airstrike on February 26. India has also reciprocated by opening its skies for Pakistani commercial jets wanting to fly east. Hostilities apart, allowing Indian commercial jets to use its airspace on their journey to the west makes perfect business sense for a bankrupt nation like Pakistan. Every time an Indian jet enters Pakistani airspace, the cash registers start ringing – totalling millions of dollars each year.
