Visakhapatnam: In view of the discussions regarding the location of the civil airport and runway for the Indian Navy in Visakhapatnam, representatives of the Andhra Pradesh Air Travelers Association (APATA) met officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at New Delhi on Wednesday.
Vice-president of the APATA, O Naresh Kumar, met Guru Prasad Mahpatra, chairman of the Airports Authority of India at New Delhi, along with Daggubati Purandeswari, independent director of Air India Limited. On behalf of APATA, Naresh Kumar requested developing Visakhapatnam airport to a world class airport, in line with Changi airport in Singapore, which is capable of handling between 30 to 50 million passengers per annum, and is spread over 1,000 hectares.
The chairman of AAI agreed to develop the airport on the condition that the land is given to the Airports Authority of India, either at Visakhapatnam or at Bhogapuram. He added that they are ready to develop the existing airport located in Visakhapatnam, if sufficient land is given by the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) and the Navy, to develop a world-class airport.
While discussing the upcoming airport at Bhogapuram, the chairman said that they are ready to develop Bhogapuram airport as well. He also pointed out that the Airports Authority of India was the lowest bidder (L1) in the previous tender. However, the tenders were cancelled and AAI was not allowed to bid in the second round on the ground that the airport developer should also have experience in developing commercial real estate space.
