Proposal for direct flights from Kozhikode to Southeast Asia

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is thinking of the possibility of opening a window to Southeast Asia from the Malabar region via the Calicut International Airport.

Already proposals have been sent to the airlines companies such as Air Asia, Malindo Air and Malaysia Airlines to operate at least one non-stop direct flight to Kuala Lumpur. “We are ready to allow them space to operate their flights. We are awaiting their schedules. Hopefully, the proposals would be fruitful shortly,” K. Srinivasa Rao, Airport Director, told The Hindu on Wednesday.

He said that a round of discussion had been held with travel agents that offer tour packages to people in north Kerala. “Malaysia and Singapore have not only become preferable tourist destinations but also commercial destinations for people from this region,” he pointed out.

Mr. Rao said that opening a window to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore would also help flyers to other places such as the Philippines, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. “Now people will have to rely either on the airports at Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram to fly directly or take connection flights to Southeastern nations,” he said.

The airline companies are also seeking first-hand information from travel agencies about the scope of starting tour packages from Malabar. “The intention of the airport authorities is to provide affordable and cost-efficient air connectivity,” Mr. Rao said.
