Escalator, 3 more aerobridges at international airport soon

Mohali: The installation of three additional aerobridges and a new escalator at the Chandigarh international airport over the next few months would add to the convenience of passengers.
Sources in the Airports Authority of India (AAI) say the components of an aerobridge have already arrived at the airport and the installation work is expected to be completed in about a fortnight.
The remaining two aerobridges would be installed by the end of the year, bringing their total number to five, a senior AAI official said. The estimated cost of each new aerobridge is reportedly more than Rs 5 crore. At present, when flight schedules coincide, priority for the use of aerobridges is being accorded to international flights over domestic ones.
The requirement for additional aerobridges was being felt for a long time due to the increasing number of flights from Chandigarh. The airport has witnessed a 74 per cent growth in the passenger traffic in the past one year, with almost 4 lakh passengers, both domestic and international, transiting the terminal in April-May this year.
“While the aerobridges on the tarmac side of the terminal will make it easier for the passengers to embark and disembark, the external escalator on the building’s city side would be highly beneficial for persons, especially the elderly, to move between different levels of the terminal,” the officer said.
When the new international terminal that has come up on the runway’s southern side became operational in September 2015, it had two new aerobridges and one old aerobridge — relocated from the old terminal building. The old aerobridge was later decommissioned due to safety concerns.
